Orzo♥Coffee: from Italy with love

'Caffè d'orzo' (barley coffee) has a long established tradition in Italy but it is not very well-known in the UK.
Known already in ancient times, barley  coffee became popular during the Fascism era, when Italy was dealing with embargo sanctions and had very limited access to real coffee. On the other hand, barley was a common cereal in Italy, used in many traditional dishes as well as in farming. Therefore, orzo coffee naturally became a substitute of the expensive and less available coffee. With the end of the war and the following economic boom, barley coffee remained used, yet its popularity was shadowed by the much more glamorous Italian coffee.
However, in recent years, orzo has re-gained its spot in the hearts of Italians and has become a fashionable and very appreciated drink, loved and consumed, both at home and in bars and coffee shops. There are various reasons for this ...

This is what the judges commented on our Orzo★Coffee:
Very pleasant robust and dark, coffee-like appearance. Very well rounded barley flavour, not too bitter with a nice finish - good with milk. Great for people who like a coffee-style drink with no caffeine.

Orzo★Coffee Pods compatible with Nespresso was awarded a GOLD star at the GREAT TASTE AWARDS 2014
This is what the judges said about our Orzo★Coffee:
We ran this longer for a big, frothy cream. The cereal on the nose was pleasant. There is little to compare these flavours to but we are getting good biscuit notes with some darker flavours, probably from the caramelisation of the sugars in the barley. With sugar, we got toasted muesli which works a treat and excelled all of our expectations. Most surprising!
